Molecular medicine is presently the key component of any modern health care system. Recent application of DNA technology in clinical practice not
only enabled accurate evaluation of most diseases, but also changed considerably their treatment modalities. Introduction of these methods can now
allow defining individual treatment protocols and preventing the majority of diseases.
Evgeny I. Schwartz (1940 – 2003) was the first Russian scientist to introduce molecular-genetic methods into clinical practice in the country and to
create one of the first human molecular genetics laboratories. It was on his initiative that several leading molecular genetics laboratories and
Russian Academy of Sciences and Russian Academy of Medical Sciences departments were established, including those at Saint Petersburg Institute of
Nuclear Physics n. a. Boris P. Konstantinov, Saint Petersburg State Medical University n. a. Ivan P. Pavlov, Saint Petersburg State Medical Pediatric
Academy, and Russian Center of Child Health at Russian Academy of Sciences. He also founded the first medical genetics Chair for specialized training
in the field. E. Shvarts was well known worldwide and collaborated with the leading scientists of Europe and USA. He trained many professionals in the
field who are currently working at the leading European and American Institutions.
The Russian congress “Molecular Basis of Clinical Medicine: State-of-the-Art and Perspectives” is an International Forum, to be held on June 6-9, 2010,
with the objective to get together the specialists of different fields of medical knowledge, to review and update current diagnostic technologies and the
world’s recent progress in the field molecular medicine, promote the further application of these techniques into the clinical practice, to increase
their scientific and technical potential.
The congress will also include special meetings of the patients’ representatives and other public organizations, to attract resources for diagnosis,
treatment, and social assistance.
